NRW Civil and Mining

Large Enterprise

Overview

NRW Civil & Mining was established in 1994, delivering its first contract in Western Australia’s Goldfields region. In its early years, the company focused on civil and mining services, steadily expanding its capabilities and reputation. A major milestone came in 1998, when NRW expanded operations into the Pilbara region. This move positioned the business to support large-scale resource projects, helping it evolve into one of Australia’s leading diversified civil and mining contractors. Over the following decades, NRW built a strong track record delivering complex projects across iron ore, coal, gold, lithium, copper, and mineral sands sectors. Its client base grew to include major resource companies such as BHP, Rio Tinto, and Fortescue Metals Group, as well as government agencies like the Western Australian Public Transport Authority. NRW continued to mature as part of the NRW Holdings Group, an Australian-owned parent company providing diversified services across civil infrastructure, mining, energy, and urban development. This integration enabled NRW Civil & Mining to offer an expanded suite of services-from bulk earthworks and mine development to rehabilitation-supporting projects nationwide. Across its history, the company has emphasised strong community relationships, including Indigenous engagement programs, joint ventures, and local sponsorships. This community focused approach, combined with investment in workforce development and safety, has been central to NRW’s long-term success. Today, NRW Civil & Mining is recognised as a major contractor with 30 years of experience delivering civil and mining projects across Australia, maintaining a reputation for capability, reliability and safe project execution

Capabilities

NRW Civil & Mining Capabilities Beneficial to the Defence Industry.

The defence sector relies heavily on partners with proven capability in large scale civil works, complex infrastructure delivery, remote area operations, and high compliance environments. NRW Civil & Mining brings several relevant strengths:

Civil Infrastructure Delivery. NRW delivers major civil works including roads, bridges, drainage, concrete structures, pavements, and bulk earthworks. These capabilities directly align with defence infrastructure programs requiring airfield upgrades, base redevelopments, wharf improvements, and new facilities.

Remote Area Construction and Logistics. NRW has extensive experience executing projects in remote regions across WA, NT, and SA-conditions common to Defence Estate upgrades and northern base infrastructure.

Complex Project Delivery at Scale. Their experience delivering large, multifaceted projects for major clients (BHP, Rio Tinto, FMG, Main Roads WA) demonstrates the scale, governance, and risk management maturity needed for high security Defence works.

Integrated Services (Civil + Mining + Engineering). NRW’s broader group capabilities include:

  • engineering and design
  • materials handling
  • construction
  • maintenance
  • electrical and instrumentation systems

These integrated services are valuable in Defence construction programs requiring end to end project execution.

Certified Safety & Environmental Systems. Defence projects require high compliance. NRW holds ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 accreditations, and is accredited by the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC) - a requirement for major Commonwealth works.

Strong Indigenous Engagement & Local Workforce Programs. These capabilities support Defence’s mandated social procurement and Indigenous participation targets. NRW operates recognised Indigenous training and JV programs.
