Overview

Martin Engineering WA does not yet hold a formal track record in the defence sector, but our core capability set has been built in an environment with comparable demands: tight tolerances, rigorous quality assurance and high-consequence reliability, delivered under real time pressure for Tier 1 mining companies and leading equipment OEMs.

For over 40 years we have provided precision line boring (22mm to over 1m), specialist on-site and portable machining with custom jigs and laser-verified quality assurance, slew milling to 5m, and welding and fabrication (GMAW, MMAW, GTAW, CNC oxy/plasma cutting) to plant and equipment where failure is not an option. Our 3D laser scanning and metrology, accurate to 0.02mm/m, supports inspection, reverse engineering and CAD/CAM outputs comparable to defence sustainment and asset integrity requirements.

Our mobile fleet of purpose-built service vehicles and 24-hour service model mean we regularly deploy technicians and equipment to remote and operational sites across Western Australia, rather than requiring assets to come to us, a model directly applicable to fleet, vessel or base-level sustainment work.

We already serve mining, manufacturing, refining and processing, agriculture, automotive, transport and construction clients to the same exacting standard defence work demands, backed by a skilled, trade-qualified workforce and a culture that treats people as our greatest asset.

We see defence as a natural extension of the precision engineering, fabrication and mobile maintenance disciplines we already practise daily, and we are actively building the systems, accreditations and relationships needed to formalise that transition.

Martin Engineering WA’s core capabilities translate directly to defence sustainment needs: precision line boring (22mm to over 1m), specialist on-site and portable machining with custom jigs and laser-verified QA, slew milling to 5m, welding and fabrication (GMAW, MMAW, GTAW, CNC oxy/plasma cutting), 3D laser scanning and metrology to 0.02mm/m, and a mobile fleet of purpose-built service vehicles offering 24-hour response across Western Australia. These are the same tight tolerances, quality assurance and rapid-mobilisation standards defence work demands, proven daily for Tier 1 miners and equipment OEMs.

Recent relevant example: a defence-sector client engaged Martin Engineering to assess and quote a specialised thread repair solution on a naval vessel, after locating us through an AI-assisted (Microsoft Copilot) search. Our team scoped the damage, developed a repair method and tooling approach, and provided a quoted solution within the client’s timeframe. In the end the repair proved not to be required, but the engagement demonstrated our ability to rapidly assess an unfamiliar, high-consequence asset, propose a technically sound fix, and be ready to mobilise on defence-relevant timelines.

We see this as an early signal of fit rather than a track record: our precision machining, in-situ repair and mobile response capabilities are readily transferable to naval, land vehicle and base-level sustainment work, and we are keen to build a genuine defence history from here.

Accreditations, memberships, clearances and awards: none currently held. We have not yet pursued formal QA/QC certification (e.g. ISO) or industry awards, though our workshop practices and documented procedures are built to the standard those systems require.
