Matrix Composites & Engineering

Small and Medium Enterprises

Overview

Matrix Composites & Engineering was founded in 1999 in Western Australia. The company built its materials expertise in the offshore energy sector, where reliability under extreme pressure is essential. Matrix has translated that deepwater knowledge into defence. Today the company is a leading sovereign manufacturer of advanced polymer composites, syntactic foams, functional additives and engineered products. Matrix gained Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) membership in 2019. This formalised its role as a trusted Australian supplier to defence primes and platform integrators.

The company operates from purpose-built facilities at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson. These include the world’s largest syntactic foam manufacturing plant and the Southern Hemisphere’s largest hyperbaric pressure test centre. The site sits within Australia’s principal naval shipbuilding precinct. Matrix supports Australian, US and UK defence customers. Its composite and polymer technologies enhance survivability and platform performance. The company continues to invest in sovereign capability, aligned to the priorities of the Defence Strategic Review, the National Defence Strategy, the Naval Shipbuilding Plan, and AUKUS Pillar 2.

Capabilities

Matrix delivers four integrated defence capabilities from a single Australian site.

Materials science and R&D. Matrix formulates and qualifies advanced polymer composites, syntactic foams, functional additives and pressure-resistant materials. The company maintains a large library of prequalified material systems. R&D is led by an in-house team of scientists and materials engineers.

Advanced manufacturing. Matrix operates Australia’s largest advanced composite manufacturing facility. Capabilities include composite syntactic structures, large format injection moulding, composite tooling, machining, finishing and assembly. The company manufactures syntactic foam structures at scale, which is a rare capability globally.

Qualification and test. Matrix runs the Southern Hemisphere’s largest hyperbaric pressure test centre. This is supplemented by polymer testing and development capabilities. The hyperbaric test facility is also available for third-party commercial use on demand.

Engineered solutions. Matrix designs survivability systems, buoyancy and protective composites, and bespoke engineered products. Each is built against customer-specific performance requirements.

Matrix is structured to deliver subsea equipment and buoyancy to the global market. The company exports to more than 30 countries and supports customers across the United States, Europe, South America and Asia. Buoyancy repair and maintenance services are provided in-region through licensed agents.

These capabilities give Australian Defence and international defence customers sovereign access to high-performance composite solutions across maritime, land and air domains. They reduce supply-chain risk and accelerate qualification timelines for new and in-service platforms.
